Don't be fooled by online claims selling supplemental "theft & burglary" insurance.

One of the most frightening things that can happen to a person is to have their home broken into. Not only can you lose valuable property, but you can be robbed of the sense of security that you and your family should have in your home. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous insurance companies will try to prey on this fear by selling you "theft & burglary" insurance as an additional policy to your homeowners insurance.

This is typically an unnecessary policy. In the majority of cases, any policy that is received from a home owner insurance quote includes protection for theft and burglary as part of the standard agreement. Therefore, there's no need to get an additional home insurance quote for an add-on theft & burglary policy in order to protect your assets in case your house is broken into. The protection offered in most standard agreements will also cover additional losses such as having Christmas presents stolen from your car while it is in a parking lot.

While theft and burglary from the home is covered in most home insurance policies, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't be concerned about protecting yourself. The cost of home insurance premiums can depend on a number of factors, including the likelihood of a future home burglary. Many factors go into determining this risk, including crime statistics in your neighborhood.

But there are other things that you can do to lower the risk of burglary in the eyes of an insurance company when getting a free home insurance quote. Repairing doors, replacing older locks and installing deadbolts are just three steps that can reduce your risk of burglary and save you money on your insurance premium.
