Named Perils coverage specifies the types of coverage that a home insurance provider must protect against. In many cases, this is a more cost-effective and smarter option than Open Perils coverage.

One of the first things that people are asked when getting home insurance quotes is what type of policy they want. This can be a confusing question for someone buying home insurance for the first time: after all, they just want coverage that protects their house against damages from fires, floods, earthquakes or other disasters and might not understand the complexity of the process of getting free home insurance quotes.

Essentially, there are two types of homeowners insurance policies that are available: Named Perils insurance and Open Perils insurance. What type of insurance you choose will depend on where you live, the types of potential damage to your home that you might need protection against and your personal ability to absorb risk versus having the insurance company assume the risk of an accident or catastrophic disaster.

For many people, Named Perils coverage is the right choice. This means that you can specify which types of perils - causes of loss of property or property damage - are covered under your plan. For example, a person who lives in California might want to make sure that they are covered in case of damage to their house from an earthquake or wildfire; however, they might not need flood insurance since they live in an area with relatively few floods.

In this case, they can choose a named peril coverage plan that specifically includes earthquake and wildfire protection but does not include other coverage such as against floods or storms. This is in opposition to an open peril plan that includes coverage for everything except certain conditions - many times these conditions are exactly what a person most needs coverage for, forcing them to pick up additional policy options. Named peril coverage is a cheap home insurance option because it limits the exposure to risk that the insurer has against the broad range of causes for property loss or damage.

When searching for home insurance online, think about your insurance risks and if Named Perils coverage is right for you.
